MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia urged the United Nations Security Council to address Sudan’s escalating conflict and humanitarian crisis, calling for justice, accountability, and Sudanese-led solutions in a heartfelt address.
Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, speaking during the semi-annual ICC briefing, emphasized breaking the violence cycle through dialogue and cooperation as a key to resolving Sudan’s crisis.
“Justice and accountability are crucial in resolving Sudan’s conflict,” Amb. Osman stated, showing Somalia’s solidarity with Sudanese civilians affected by the ongoing violence in Darfur.
Somalia outlined three priorities: revitalizing Sudan’s justice institutions, leveraging frameworks like the Juba Peace Agreement, and ensuring regional ownership of justice processes in Sudan.
Ambassadr Osman stressed the importance of holding external actors accountable and urged transparency in monitoring their roles in fueling the conflict in Sudan.
While acknowledging Sudan’s steps toward accountability, Amb. Abukar emphasized protecting civilians and ensuring unhindered humanitarian access in conflict areas.
In closing, he urged international support for a holistic approach to Sudan’s crisis, combining justice, aid, and mediation, and breaking the violence cycle through dialogue.
As Sudan’s conflict deepens, displacing millions and increasing famine risks, Somalia’s appeal underscores the growing need for global engagement to secure lasting peace in Sudan.
