MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is embarking on another foreign trip on Monday, following recent visits to Ethiopia, Uganda, Djibouti, Egypt, and Switzerland.
President Mohamud and his delegation are now headed to Tanzania for an official visit. He will meet President Samia Suluhu Hassan to discuss strengthening bilateral relations.
While in Arusha, President Mohamud will participate in meetings concerning the East African Community, of which Somalia is a full member.
Mohamud’s travel schedule has increased recently, leading to widespread discussions on his frequent trips within a short time frame.
Federal MP Dahir Amin Jesow criticized President Mohamud for spending $81,000 on a single night’s hotel in Switzerland, while a soldier protecting Somalia earns just $190.
Zakariye Ali, a social media user, criticized the government, saying taxes should benefit the people, not be spent on flights and hotels.
Aweys Siraad Omar, a local resident in Mogadishu, said, “President Mohamud travels are frequent, it seems like he’s always on a trip, rather than being in the country.”
He added, “The national budget is being spent on luxurious travel for Mohamud and his family.”
Last week, President Hassan attended the World Economic Forum in Switzerland and the CAADP summit in Kampala, Uganda.
