MOGADISHU, Somalia — A plane carrying 12 Somali nationals has landed in Somali capital, Mogadishu, on Friday after being repatriated from Sudan.
They had been held in detention centers in Khartoum and Omdurman after authorities arrested them while trying to travel irregularly to other destinations, officials said.
Their return followed diplomatic efforts by the Somali government and coordination with international partners.
The migrants received a warm welcome upon arrival in Mogadishu from the Diaspora Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We remain committed to supporting our citizens facing hardship abroad and protecting their rights and safety,” the ministry said.
The ministry also thanked the Somali Embassy in Sudan, the IOM and Sudanese authorities for their role in facilitating the release and repatriation of the citizens.
The government also urged Somali youth to avoid irregular migration and to consider the serious risks associated with such journeys.
