Five members of a Somali family were killed in a suspected arson attack early Tuesday in Vantaa, north of Helsinki.
Police said a sixth family member, an infant, survived. Authorities indicated the family did not appear to have been specifically targeted.
A 70-year-old man living in the building was arrested on suspicion of starting the fire and was to be questioned Tuesday.
Police Inspector Mikael Backlund said five deceased were found in the staircase around 6:30 a.m., including two adults and three children.
The victims’ ages ranged from three to forty, and heavy smoke trapped the family in the stairwell, Backlund said, motive still unknown.
