The UN Security Council unanimously renewed the mandate of the panel monitoring sanctions targeting Somalia-based Al-Shabaab until November 2026.
All 15 Council members voted in favor, extending authorization for naval inspections, arms embargo enforcement, charcoal export bans, and IED controls against militants.
Other sanctions, including travel bans, asset freezes, and general arms embargoes, remain open-ended, continuing pressure on the group’s finances and operational capabilities.
James Kariuki, Britain’s UN charge d’affaires, praised Council members for constructive negotiations, noting the text strengthens efforts to limit Al-Shabaab’s access to arms.
Al-Shabaab has waged a 16-year insurgency, prompting Somali forces to intensify airstrikes, killing 868 militants since February with international partner support in Puntland.
