MOGADISHU, Somalia — Ukrainian pilot Aleynik Alexander, working for the U.N., appeared in a new video released by Al-Shabaab Monday morning.
He said he and his crew have been held hostage since January 2024, after their helicopter made an emergency landing in hostile territory.
Alexander urged Ukraine and the U.N. to negotiate their release, emphasizing the crew’s safety and the urgency of international diplomatic efforts.
Al-Shabaab controls the territory where the helicopter landed, complicating rescue operations and raising global concern over prolonged captivity of U.N. personnel.
