MOGADISHU, Somalia – On Thursday, Somalia officially began its two-year term as a member of the United Nations Security Council.

Joining Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama for the 2025-2026 term, Somalia replaces Mozambique and takes its place alongside Algeria and Sierra Leone as one of three African members.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed Somalia’s return to the UN Security Council after 54 years.

President Mohamud expressed pride in the achievement, noting how it reflects Somalia’s increasing influence in global affairs and commitment to progress.

Despite diplomatic gains, Somalia is battling al-Shabab militant group which still holds large swaths of territory and seeks to impose a strict interpretation of Islamic law.
