Somalia Fails Displaced Families — Amnesty

Read Time:43 Second

Somali authorities and the international community have failed to protect thousands displaced by drought and climate change, Amnesty International said Monday.

The report “No Rain, No Food, No Animals” says drought and conflict between 2020 and 2023 forced thousands from southern Somalia to camps and Kenya’s Dadaab.

Amnesty said authorities failed to provide food and health care as climate-driven drought dried water sources, spreading cholera and worsening hunger across rural communities.

“Somalia’s people are bearing the brunt of a crisis they did not cause,” said Tigere Chagutah, Amnesty’s regional director for East and Southern Africa.

The group said food prices have risen 160% since 2020 and urged Somalia to raise its health budget above the current five percent.

Amnesty urged wealthy countries most responsible for emissions to support Somalia in adapting to climate impacts and protecting displaced and vulnerable communities.
