Somali minister meets elders to end clan violence

Somalia’s federal government has summoned clan elders from two rival groups after deadly clashes near Wanlaweyn in Lower Shabelle.

Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Ali (Xoosh) met traditional and political leaders from the Gaaljecel and Five-Caleemo clans to discuss ending the escalating violence and revenge attacks.

The meeting focused on reconciliation, restoring calm, and finding long-term solutions to the conflict that has displaced residents and destroyed nearby villages.

Fighting reportedly began after a man was burned to death outside Wanlaweyn, sparking retaliatory attacks and worsening clan tensions across the region.

Xoosh condemned the killings and urged elders to uphold Somali and Islamic values emphasizing peace, forgiveness, and protection of life and property.

Government troops and military court officials were deployed to separate warring sides, investigate incidents, and restore stability to affected parts of Lower Shabelle.

Clan-based violence remains frequent in southern Somalia, often fueled by land and resource disputes that repeatedly undermine peacebuilding and local governance efforts.
