
MOGADISHU — Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe left Mogadishu Monday, flying back to Kismayo after opposition talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud collapsed without agreement.
Opposition leaders gathered at the Halane camp near the airport for several days, attempting to resolve disputes over elections, constitutional reforms, and political disagreements.
At the center of the deadlock was the 2012 Provisional Constitution, with the opposition insisting nationwide agreement is required, while the federal government would proceed independently.
Disagreements over overdue elections in federal member states added tension, as the opposition demanded votes follow state constitutions, while the government preferred elections under contested rules instead.
The U.S. Embassy urged Somali leaders to compromise, while the United Nations expressed regret over the failure in secure an election deal.
Puntland President Said Deni, who also attended the talks, departed without agreement, leaving Somalia at a fragile political crossroads.
