The European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, brought together senior Somali leaders and members of the diplomatic community for a Ramadan Iftar at the EU compound in Mogadishu, using the occasion to underline the importance of cooperation and national understanding.
The gathering, held during the holy month of Ramadan, convened representatives from the Federal Government, political actors from across the spectrum, civil society figures, media professionals and international partners. The atmosphere reflected the spirit traditionally associated with Ramadan, centred on peace, reflection and reconciliation.
Addressing guests, Ambassador Di Mauro spoke about the need for open communication and compromise at a time when Somalia faces complex political questions. She stressed that meaningful progress depends on leaders engaging one another constructively and placing national interest above division.
In recent months, the EU envoy has maintained close contact with a range of Somali stakeholders. Her engagement has included discussions with federal authorities and other political groupings aimed at encouraging understanding on matters such as the electoral framework, security coordination and the constitutional review process. Officials familiar with the discussions describe her approach as steady and inclusive.
Diplomatic sources note that the Ambassador’s efforts have complemented wider international support for Somali-led dialogue, while maintaining clear respect for national ownership. Her long experience in diplomacy has been evident in her consistent outreach across political lines.
During her remarks, Ambassador Di Mauro acknowledged the resilience shown by the Somali people over the years. She observed that despite recurring challenges, the country has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to navigate periods of tension and continue forward.
She reiterated the European Union’s backing for processes that are Somali-led and based on consultation and consensus. According to the Ambassador, sustainable progress will rest on trust, mutual respect and a readiness to find common ground.
Beyond its ceremonial significance, the Iftar created space for informal exchanges among leaders who do not always meet in the same setting. Participants described the evening as an opportunity to ease tensions and encourage dialogue in a more relaxed environment.
The European Union remains a longstanding partner to Somalia in areas including governance reform, security support and humanitarian assistance. Through diplomatic engagement and practical cooperation, it continues to support efforts aimed at strengthening stability and cohesion.
Ambassador Di Mauro’s Ramadan message focused on shared responsibility and collective purpose, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to supporting Somalia as it works towards lasting peace and inclusive political progress.
