MOGADISHU, Somalia – At Al-Adalada camp, near the capital Mogadishu, 49-year-old Hawa Sharif Ali relies on the Sinkadheer health centre for her family’s medical needs, amidst displacement and drought.

Hawa, a mother of six, does laundry in Garasbaley to support her family. Life has been hard, worsened by the 2022/23 drought in Somalia.

Despite challenges, Hawa takes pride in managing her household and ensures her children’s health, finding hope at the health centre.

In December 2024, Hawa brought her son for his final measles vaccine, part of the Expanded Programme on Immunization, prioritizing her child’s health.

“We can’t afford private hospitals, but this centre is accessible. I’m happy my children have completed their immunizations,” Hawa said.

ECHO-supported health facilities are saving lives, treating malnutrition, and responding to disease outbreaks like measles, strengthening local clinics for future needs.

Sinkadheer health centre offers vital services under the Integrated Health and Nutrition Programme, providing lifesaving care for families who can’t afford treatment.

Supported by ECHO and others, the programme transforms lives, ensuring Somali mothers and children receive essential health services amidst displacement.

The health centre sees about 200 patients daily, mainly from nearby IDP communities, offering general health services, nutrition support, and malnutrition prevention.

Mukhtar Derow Luqmaan, supervisor, says: “The centre is a lifeline for mothers, children, and vulnerable groups, providing essential health and nutrition services.”

WHO collaborates with partners to address health challenges in displaced communities, bringing health solutions closer to those in need.

Dr. Renee Van de Weerdt, WHO Representative in Somalia, praises donors like ECHO for supporting lifesaving health care in drought-affected areas, building a stronger future.

Through the generosity of ECHO and partners, WHO not only provides medical care but brings hope, nurturing Somalia’s future and empowering families facing hardship.
