MOGADISHU, Somalia – On Monday, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) met with female scholars specializing in disaster management research in Mogadishu.

The discussion centered on the critical role women can play in disaster risk reduction, improving relief efforts, and building resilience against future crises.

Mohamud Moalim, Commissioner of SoDMA, emphasized the disproportionate impact of humanitarian crises on women and children, stressing that they are often the hardest hit by disasters in Somalia.

Moalim commended the scholars for their dedication and called on them to actively engage in volunteer efforts to support Somalia’s resilience and recovery.

“Our women’s knowledge and skills are crucial in addressing Somalia’s challenges,” Moalim said. He also urged them to support SoDMA’s efforts to build a more resilient future.

SoDMA’s Director of Operations, Lul Ahmed Galwo, expressed her enthusiasm about involving educated women in the effort.

She also emphasized the critical role their skills play in disaster risk reduction, relief efforts, and climate change adaptation.

The meeting marks the beginning of a new collaboration between researchers and disaster management, with a focus on empowering women to lead Somalia’s climate and disaster response.
