MOGADISHU, Somalia – Mohamud Moalim, Commissioner of the Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), has held talks with renowned clan elders to lead peace efforts in ending clan conflicts in southern and central Somalia.

Commissioner Moalim urged the elders to stand up and launch dialogue and community reconciliation efforts to find a solution to the escalating inter-clan violence.

Moalim said Saturday’s meeting focused on preventing conflicts, boosting self-reliance, reducing foreign aid dependency, strengthening governance, and ensuring aid reaches those in need.

“We met with local elders to find a solution to the ongoing clan violence. This is a valuable opportunity to address conflicts that often lead to humanitarian disasters and severe crises,” he said.

During the meeting, SoDMA’s Deputy Chairman, Dr. Ahmed Abdi Aden, praised the elders’ role in peace-building and community reconciliation across Somalia.

Dr. Aden urged them to resolve conflicts and focus on implementing projects that enhance resilience and improve government services.

Among the elders, influential leaders praised SoDMA’s efforts, saying the meeting would bolster cooperation to tackle Somalia’s challenges, including internal conflicts, droughts, and disasters.

The meeting comes as clan violence has surged in Somalia since last year, affecting Hiran, Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle, Galgadud, and Mudug regions, leaving hundreds dead and many homeless.
