MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s government confirmed Wednesday that Turkish F-16 fighter jets have been flying over Mogadishu, supporting Somali forces in national security operations.
Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi made the announcement during a ceremony marking a leadership transition within the Somali National Army in Mogadishu.
Fiqi said the jets are intended to strengthen ongoing operations against armed groups, including al-Shabab and Daesh, which authorities say threaten national stability.
He did not clarify whether the aircraft were purchased or donated by Turkey, nor did he disclose the number or their operational purpose.
Residents reported hearing loud aircraft noise during early morning drills Tuesday, a rare occurrence in Mogadishu, with videos of the jets circulating widely online.
The announcement comes amid reports linking the deployment to Turkey’s broader strategic interests, including energy projects. Turkey maintains its largest overseas military base.
