MOGADISHU, Somalia – A Turkish cargo ship, the “Ship of Goodness,” arrived at Mogadishu’s seaport on Saturday, delivering 3,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Somalia.

This shipment followed a direct appeal from Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) amid concerns of an impending drought linked to the La Niña weather pattern, characterized by cooler ocean temperatures and significant impacts on weather patterns.

The operation was coordinated by Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the Turkish Red Crescent, and various NGOs.

The aid, comprising 130,000 food packages, hygiene products, clothing, and shelter materials, was handed over to Mohamud Moalim, head of SoDMA. The handover event was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama and other dignitaries, including the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia.

Speaking to journalists, Mohamud Moalim expressed his gratitude to Türkiye for its dedication to supporting the most vulnerable in Somalia.

Moalim stated that the aid distribution will prioritize the most vulnerable populations, including internally displaced persons, children, and families in drought-affected areas.

“This shipment not only provides immediate relief but also reflects Türkiye’s commitment to international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges, especially in the climate-impacted Horn of Africa,” he added.

Since 2016, Türkiye has delivered over 60,000 tons of aid to Somalia, demonstrating a strong partnership focused on mitigating natural disasters and promoting development.

Türkiye and Somalia have forged a dynamic partnership in recent years, with significant advancements in energy, infrastructure, and humanitarian aid. Türkiye’s engagement began in 2011 amid one of Somalia’s most devastating droughts, providing essential humanitarian assistance that set the stage for enduring collaboration.

Currently, Türkiye operates the largest military training camp in Somalia, dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of the Somali armed forces and bolstering national security. Türkiye also provides aerial support during operations against Al Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked group.

Furthermore, Türkiye has positioned itself as a crucial ally in times of crisis, regularly airlifting critically injured victims after attacks in Mogadishu and other regions.

This unwavering commitment not only addresses Somalia’s immediate needs but also underscores Türkiye’s investment in the country’s long-term development through substantial contributions to education, healthcare, and infrastructure initiatives.
