
MOGADISHU, Somalia — Representatives from Qatar, Türkiye, the UAE, the UK, and the US gathered in Washington, D.C. for the seventh meeting of the Somalia Quint, alongside officials from the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
During the meeting, the partners reaffirmed their commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of reducing regional tensions through dialogue, particularly through Turkish mediation.
Discussions centered on addressing the ongoing threats from terrorist groups in the Horn of Africa and highlighted the need for collaborative economic and security initiatives.The representatives expressed strong support for the FGS’s efforts to develop professional and accountable security forces.
They agreed on the necessity of improving coordination for international training to enhance immediate operational effectiveness and facilitate long-term capacity building.
A significant point of discussion was the establishment of a new African Union Stabilization and Support Mission in Somalia, which will succeed the current African Union Transition Mission. The partners stressed the need for inclusive planning, ensuring broad stakeholder involvement to create realistic mission goals and a clear exit strategy.
Furthermore, the importance of integrating governance and humanitarian considerations into military operations was highlighted, aiming to ensure sustainable stability in the region.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to reconvene in Mogadishu for future discussions, reflecting a collective commitment to fostering security and development in Somalia.
