BREAKING: Former Somaliland President Dies at 86

Read Time:2 Minute, 32 Second

Hargeisa, Somaliland — Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud (Siilaanyo), passed away on Friday evening in Hargeisa, his family and friends confirmed. Siilaanyo served as minister of planning from 1965 to 1973 and as minister of commerce from 1973 to 1978. He also became the leader of the northern region of Somalia (Somaliland) from 2010 to 2017.

Silanyo was elected the 4th President of Somaliland in 2010, serving a five-year term. He remained in office until December 13, 2017, following a two-year extension, when he was succeeded by the current president, Muse Bihi Abdi.

The cause of his death has not been confirmed yet, but his passing has quickly shifted the mood in Somaliland—from the excitement of Wednesday’s presidential vote to a period of mourning.

Born in 1938 in Burao, Silanyo played a key role in Somaliland’s political scene for decades. From 2002 to 2010, he led the Peace, Unity, and Development Party (PUDP), guiding it through a time of significant influence in Somaliland’s politics.

Before his involvement in Somaliland politics, he worked in Somalia’s government, serving as Minister of Planning and Minister of Commerce under Siad Barre in the 1960s and ’70s, before becoming a key figure in Somaliland’s independence movement in the 1980s.

In the early 1990s, after Somaliland declared independence, Silanyo became a key leader in the Somali National Movement (SNM), which fought for the region’s sovereignty. He later played a major role in shaping Somaliland’s political system and declaring it a self-governing republic.

As president, Silanyo prioritized the economy, infrastructure, and stability. His government invested in education and healthcare, and during his time in office, Somaliland held several peaceful, fair elections.

Despite Somaliland being internationally unrecognized, Silanyo’s leadership brought attention to the region. He worked hard to gain international support for its independence while maintaining ties with key allies.

Silanyo retired from active politics after his presidency ended in 2017 but remained a respected elder statesman, offering counsel to Somaliland’s leaders. His death marks the end of an important chapter in Somaliland’s history, as the nation reflects on the legacy of one of its most influential leaders.
