Read Time:52 Second

The United States stands with the people and government of the Federal Republic of Somalia to commemorate the victims of the horrific October 14, 2017 terrorist attack in Mogadishu that killed 587 innocent Somali citizens and injured hundreds more. We continue to extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims and injured, as well as those affected by the suicide bombings yesterday in Baidoa. We commend the response of the Somali security forces and first responders, who investigated and detained the attackers and saved many lives.

This sickening attack, along with the tragic events yesterday in Baidoa, show the extent to which terrorists are willing to go to create havoc and destruction in Somalia. The United States remains committed to collaboration with the people and government of Somalia who want peace, a bright future for the country’s youth, and opportunities to thrive and promote development. We denounce such senseless acts and will continue to provide our assistance to overcome terrorism and promote stability and prosperity for the people of Somalia.
