US military chief in Africa arrives in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The newly appointed commander of U.S. Africa Command Gen. Stephen Townsend has paid an unannounced visit to the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Townsend met with Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khayre and U.S. Ambassador Donald Yamamoto and senior Somali military leadership in Mogadishu.

He pledged to continue supporting Somali army forces fighting against al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab.

Townsend is now on his first trip to the African continent since he took charge of AFRICOM.

The US military carried out dozens of drone strikes targeting al Shabab and Islamic State militants in south and central Somalia.
