MOGADISHU, Somalia – The US especial forces accompanied by Somali troops conducted a night raid on civilian houses near Janalle town, some 94 km from Somali capital Mogadishu.

The coalition forces vandalized civilian homes with bomb explosions in Towfiq area near a town controlled by al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab.

The especial forces briefly detained several people on suspicion of Al Shabaab members, according to witness, who asked to be anonymous.

He says no civilian was killed or injured in the operation carried out by Somali and US troops.

Last year, US Special Forces were accused of complicity in the deaths of civilians after five unarmed men were killed during a raid by Somali troops that they “aided and assisted”.

The casualties were described as banana farmers by local inhabitants, and appear to have been shot while trying to flee the site of the operation.

The US has ramped up military efforts against al-Shabaab, the deadliest Islamic extremist group in sub-Saharan Africa, under the Trump administration.

US troops in Somalia is to enhance the local military’s ability to fight al-Shabaab, which is affiliated to al-Qaida.
