MOGADISHU, Somalia – UN migration agency says 50 refugees have drowned after vessel carrying scores migrants went down in the Mediterranean Sea.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Tunisia, after leaving from Libya.

IOM says four bodies have been recovered so far in an ongoing rescue operation.

It says 16 other were also rescued in the operation.

Friday’s incident is one of the deadliest refugee boat mishaps this year”, said in a statement released by IOM.

The boat is believed to left from Libya’s Zuwara.

The Mediterranean Sea is the “world’s deadliest sea crossing”, according to the UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, with one in 14 people dying on the route from Libya to Europe last year.

A UN report published in January said six refugees and migrants died every day in 2018 while attempting to cross the Mediterranean.
