MOGADISHU – Somali-based group of Al Shabaab claimed to have launched deadly assault at African Union soldiers’ base in Bulo Marer town, some 150km southwest of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.
Sunday’s raid started with suicide car bomb rammed into front gate of African Union forces’ base in the town as heavily armed Al Shabaab fighters stormed inside the base, a witness said.
Hussein Mohamed, a witness told Mareeg Online that huge explosions and gunfire could be heard, adding that the African Union troops had been repulsing the attack.
Somali-based group of Al Shabaab claimed to have killed at least 59 Burundian soldiers serving under African Union mission in Somalia in an orchestrated attack in the town.
The group says it lost 9 jihadists during the Sunday’s assault.
There was no immediate response from the African Union mission in Mogadishu over the claims made by Al Shabaab.
