MOGADISHU, Somalia –The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia James Swan has met with Somalia’s upper house of parliament speaker Abdi Hashi Abdullahi in Mogadishu.

Sen. Hashi received Amb. Swan at his office, discussing on the current situation, security, humanitarian crisis, and the upcoming election in 2020/1 in Somalia.

He urged Swan to accelerate development projects supported by United Nation in Somalia.

Mr. Swan, a US diplomat arrived last week in Mogadishu.

He replaced an emissary, Nicholas Haysom, who was expelled six months ago by Somalia after he raised human rights concerns.

Swan served as Washington’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He was also a US deputy assistant secretary of state for Africa and ambassador to Djibouti.

The United Nations is seeking to shore up stability in Somalia, where al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab fighters have been fighting for a decade to topple the government.
