UN chief appoints new envoy to Somalia
MOGADISHU, Somalia – The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed James Swan as his special representative to Somalia.
Mr. Swan, a US diplomat will replace an emissary, Nicholas Haysom, who was expelled four months ago by Somalia after he raised human rights concerns.
Swan served as Washington’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He was also a US deputy assistant secretary of state for Africa and ambassador to Djibouti.
The United Nations is seeking to shore up stability in Somalia, where al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab fighters have been fighting for a decade to topple the government.
