Ugandan Forces Awarded Medals for Role in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia — The African Union praised Ugandan peacekeepers for combating Al-Shabaab insurgents, stabilizing volatile regions, supporting Somali security forces, and protecting civilians in southern Somalia.

In a ceremony at the AU Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia forward base, UPDF Battle Group XLI troops received medals, certificates, and recognition for exemplary service.

The outgoing unit handed over duties to incoming Battle Group XLV, ensuring continuity, sustaining operations against extremists, and maintaining security across Barawe, Baledamin, and surrounding sub-sectors.

Brig. Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, representing Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma, highlighted Battle Group XLI’s efforts in offensive and defensive operations, mentoring Somali troops, and fostering local community engagement.

Incoming commander Col. Justus Musenene pledged to build on successes through rigorous training, improved counter-insurgency skills, and continued operations to maintain stability and protect civilians.
