At least two people were killed and four others injured on Saturday in an explosion in Barawe town, approximately 210 km from the capital, Mogadishu.
Witnesses said an explosive device attached to a vehicle detonated in the parking lot of Barawe Airport in the Lower Shabelle region.
The explosion caused panic in the area, with smoke seen rising from the scene.
The wounded to a local hospital shortly after the blast.
It remains unclear how the vehicle managed to enter the airport perimeter without being detected.
Al Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack through its affiliated media channels.
The explosion comes just a day after a separate blast injured four people in Kahda district of Mogadishu.
Efforts to reach security officials in Barawe for comment were unsuccessful.
Driven out of Mogadishu in 2011, the group intensified attacks in the Middle and Lower Shabelle and Hiran regions.
For over a decade, the militant group has been fighting to impose a hardline interpretation of Sharia law in Somalia.
Al-Shabab still controls large swaths of southern and central Somalia.
