Turkey is accelerating plans to establish a military base in Somaliland’s eastern Sanaag region, Turkish media reported, citing interests Gulf Aden shipping.
The move comes amid shifting regional dynamics following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, a development that has heightened diplomatic tensions across the region.
Somalia considers Somaliland part of its territory despite its 1991 secession. Last year, a sea access MoU with Ethiopia collapsed after backlash.
Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamid is expected in Ankara to sign an agreement, though Turkish and Somali governments have not confirmed details.
Turkey already operates its largest overseas military base in Mogadishu, training Somali forces and supporting the federal government against militants for years.
