Tensions Rise Over “North-East Somalia”

Read Time:29 Second

Puntland has rejected a new regional administration announced in Las Anod, accusing Somalia’s federal government of interference and fueling instability in disputed territories.

Speaker Abdirisak Ahmed Said said the “North-East Somalia” body lacks political legitimacy, warning it risks deepening divisions across Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn regions.

He stressed Puntland only recognized SSC-Khaatumo under wartime conditions, calling the Las Anod declaration a direct challenge to Puntland’s unity and political authority.

The Las Anod conference dissolved SSC-Khaatumo, adopted a new constitution, and reignited tensions with Somaliland, which also lays claim to the contested regions.
