MOGADISHU, Somalia — Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo met with the leaders of the semi-autonomous states of Jubbaland and Puntland, amid political tensions over elections and constitutional reforms.
Farmaajo, who served as Somalia’s president from 2017 to 2022, held talks with Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe and Puntland President Said Deni at a hotel in Halane compound near Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.
The meeting followed Farmaajo’s visit to the two regional leaders, who are in Mogadishu for political discussions with federal authorities and opposition groups.
discussions included updates on negotiations focused on Somalia’s electoral framework and proposed amendments to the provisional constitution.
Earlier, the regional presidents met opposition groups discussing anticipated talks between Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and opposition leaders.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre also met the leaders, addressing preparations for a broader national consultative conference planned soon.
Puntland and Jubbaland leaders said they will remain in Mogadishu until agreements are reached, urging President Mohamud to engage seriously.
