Somaliland has issued a strong warning to Somalia’s federal government following remarks by Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi that suggested the use of foreign military force against the breakaway region.
In a statement released on Monday, Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the comments as reckless and contrary to international law, citing the UN Charter and core principles governing state conduct.
The ministry said Somaliland does not accept authority from Mogadishu and reaffirmed its claim that it regained independence in 1991, based on the borders it held when it gained independence in 1960.
Somaliland said the territory has since built institutions rooted in peace, political stability and a functioning democratic system, despite the absence of international recognition.
The statement warned that Somalia would be held responsible for any fallout resulting from what it described as inflammatory rhetoric, and urged the international community to take a clear stance against actions that could threaten regional stability.
At the same time, Somaliland said it remains committed to maintaining peace in the Horn of Africa, while asserting its right to self-defence under international law.
Fiqi, speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera, said Somalia would not allow Israel to establish a military base on Somaliland territory, accusing external actors of undermining Somalia’s sovereignty.
Somalia has increased diplomatic engagement in response, raising the issue at international meetings, while Somaliland has denied claims that Israel intends to establish a military presence in the territory.
Somaliland, located in northwestern Somalia, declared independence in 1991 following the collapse of Somalia’s central government. It maintains its own administration and security forces, but its claim to statehood is not internationally recognised, and Mogadishu continues to regard the territory as part of Somalia.
