Somalia: Somali legislators condemns diplomat detention
The Federal government of Somalia has strongly condemned the arrest of its consular in Kenya Siyad Mahmoud Shire on Friday night in Nairobi. Mr. Mire was detained by Kenyan police on Saturday night from his residence in Nairobi’s Hurlingham estate. Several other people were arrested
alongside the consular and taken to local police station in the area.Somali national assembly speaker
Professor Mohamed Sheik Osman Jawaari termed the arrest as an ‘aggressive’ and unnecessary
move. “It is an irregular act and absolutely against international diplomatic rules that security forces raid the
home of such high profile diplomat” Somali parliament speaker said on Saturday.“We will not accept such intolerable act by Kenyan security forces on our diplomatic mission—I urge the cabinet to
send an urgent complaint letter to Kenya and ask why their forces have done such barbaric raid and arrest of the Somali consular,” said Professor Jawari “We don’t want to play the bilateral relations between the two countries, but w are telling Kenya that Somali government will
not accept the continuation of such arrests against our people,” He added.
Consular Siyad Mahmoud Shire was later released on Friday evening after almost two hours in Kenyan police custody. More 4000 Somalis have been arrested by Kenyan police during a security operation in the predominately Somali suburb of Eastleigh in Niarobi. Over 200 undocumented Somali refugees were deported back to Somalia.
While more prisoners were physically concentrated in one place called the kasarani concentration camps.
