Somalia’s al-Shabab attacks on military base near Kismayo

The Islamist militants have carried out an attack on a military base in southern Somalia after detonating a suicide car bomb.

The attack started with truck bomb explosion early morning prayers in Bar Sanguni area, some 50km north of Kismayo.

The al-Shabab militant group says it killed 27 soldiers in the raid.

Reinforcements were sent to the area, according to military officer, Hussein Harun Mohamed.

Mohamed denied claims made by Al Shabaab.

He said 7 Somali soldiers were only killed in the attack.

Al-Shabab has been waging an insurgency in Somalia for more than 10 years.

A 22,000-strong African Union force is in the country to help the government fight the al-Qaeda-linked militants.
