Somalia’s al Shabaab cuts off hands of two men in Sakow

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The al Qaeda- affiliated Al-Shabab group has publicly cut off the right hands of two young men for stealing in a rebel-held town of Sakow,  about 515 Km southwest of Somali capital Mogadishu

The Shariah court that carried out the sentences is run by the powerful insurgent group al-Shabab, which is trying to topple Somalia’s U.N.-backed government and install a strict form of Islam.

The group’s judge at militant court convicted Abdulkadir Mohamed Aden, 19 and Abdi Mohamed Hassan, 24, of breaking into shops in Sakow town.

The al Qaeda inspired group says Aden and Hassan had admitted at a trial to stealing 6874 So-Shillings from two shops in the town and ordered their right hands to be cut off.

The group warns residents of theft.

However, Al Shabaab, which has been fighting for more than ten years to topple the central government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islamic law, carries out executions, floggings and amputations after summary trials in cases ranging from espionage to theft.
