Somalia’s ambassador to the United States warned that recognizing Somaliland would violate international law and undermine counterterrorism cooperation.
Ambassador Dahir Hassan Abdi said Somalia is a sovereign nation with internationally recognized borders, and northern grievances should be resolved through a unified federal system.
The warning follows Senator Ted Cruz urging President Trump to officially recognize Somaliland, citing its strategic location and role as a key security and diplomatic partner.
Despite congressional pressure, Washington maintains support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, reaffirmed by international agreements and regional cooperation with Ethiopia and other allies.
Dahir highlighted federalism’s role in ensuring local autonomy and accountability, noting the Las Anod conflict displaced nearly 200,000 people and fueled opposition to Somaliland’s independence.
He concluded that division could reignite conflict and inspire secessionist movements elsewhere, emphasizing that lasting peace depends on Somalis working together, not borders alone.
