MOGADISHU – Somali especial forces backed by U.S. troops have carried out joint military offensive against major stronghold of al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab.
The especial coalition forces destroyed first militants’ checkpoint of Bu’alle town, about 300km (185 miles) south-west of Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Somali military official Ali Mohamud says country’s forces, along with US especial troops had destroyed key Al Shabaab bases in the town.
He says at least 22 militants were killed in the operation.
Mohamud said two high-profile foreign Jihadists were among those killed.
It is unclear their nationalities.
He says the two foreign Jihadists were in charge of international relations and to train Al Shabaab suicide bombers.
There was no immediate response from Al Shabaab over the claims.
The attack comes a day after US military said it had killed 13 Al Shabaab fighters in drone strike carried out in Gandarshe area, some 30km away from Mogadishu.
