MOGADISHU, Somalia – Uganda Peoples Defence Forces under African Union mission in Somalia known as AMISOM Brig. Gen. Michael Kabango has paid a visit to army bases in Barawe and Maryan Gubay Forward Operating Bases.

Kabango checked their operational readiness.

He says his troops were working with Somali security forces to end extortion of local residents by al Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab.

Kabango added that the group  has been facing financial constraints since its fighters lost most of the coastal cities to Somali army forces backed by African Union forces.

He accused the group of resorting to manning checkpoints to extort money from residents and also using other unscrupulous means, to collect revenue illegally, to sustain themselves.

Brig. Kabango is on a familiarisation tour of all AMISOM Forward Operating Bases in Sector I.
