Somalia will chair an emergency UN Security Council meeting Thursday focusing on Iran, according to a spokesperson for Somalia’s permanent mission.

Somalia assumed the rotating presidency of the Security Council on Jan. 1, 2026, giving it authority to set agendas this month now.

The meeting was requested by the United States and scheduled for Jan. 15, 2026, Somalia’s mission spokesperson Khadiija Ahmed said Thursday publicly.

Iran has seen violent protests nationwide amid a worsening economy and a sharp collapse in the value of its national currency recently.

Death toll estimates vary widely, with some reports citing 48 security personnel and 483 protesters killed, while others suggest more than 2,000.

President Donald Trump warned Iran against violent repression, later saying killings and executions had stopped, and warning of consequences if resumed again.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi told Fox News the violence was caused by terrorist groups he said were armed by Israel allegedly.
