MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali army forces carried out an operation against Al Shabaab near Bal’ad town, some 30km north of the capital city of Mogadishu.

Somali Intelligence’s Twitter feed said, six militants were killed and another was captured alive during the operation carried out at Basra area near the town.

“We have killed six armed militants belonging to Al Shabaab while we captured one of them alive after an operation”, the intelligence agency said.

The operation comes a day after Somali army chief, Gen. Dahir Aden Elmi pledged that its forces will perfectly retaliate the killing of nine military soldiers, including two generals.

The army generals were among those who were killed in Thursday’s roadside bomb explosion claimed by Al Shabaab near Somali capital Mogadishu.

The group has been waging insurgency for more than ten years in Somalia.

The Al Qaeda inspired group, which once controlled much of Somali capital Mogadishu in 2011 wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
