Somalia has officially requested the dismantling of the C6+ coordination group, citing progress toward full sovereignty and institutional independence.
The C6+ includes the US, UK, EU, AU, IGAD, UN, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sweden—formed 15 years ago during Somalia’s fragile post-conflict political transition.
Somalia says the group now creates a “misleading impression” that its governance is externally guided, which undermines the legitimacy of national democratic institutions and leadership.
In a letter to UN envoy James Swan, the Somali Foreign Ministry described the platform as outdated, counterproductive, and no longer aligned with reality.
Somalia also emphasized its functional constitutional institutions, a maturing democratic system and reforms led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
International partners are urged to engage through frameworks that reflect Somalia’s sovereignty, national ownership and equal standing.
Somalia reaffirmed its willingness to maintain strong cooperation with C6+ members through diplomatic partnerships despite calling for the group’s end.
