Somalia says Minister Janan arrested for serious crimes
MOGADISHU – Somali police say its soldiers have arrested Jubaland regional state security Minister Abdirashid Janan in the capital, Mogadishu.
Mr. Janan was detained late on Saturday shortly after arriving at Mogadishu airport from Dolow town, said in a statement seen by Mareeg Online.
He is facing “serious crimes” which is being investigated.
The police took him into custody for further interrogations.
Mr. Janan was accused of committing crimes against civilian people in 2015 in Dollow town near Somali border along Ethiopia.
He was also accused of shooting dead four prisoners in the town while he was in charge of security in the region.
Meanwhile, dozens of residents in Dolow took to the streets in the town to protest against Janan’s detention in Mogadishu.
The protestors demanded Somalia’s federal government for unconditional the release of Janan.
However, Janan’s detention comes amid an escalating tension between the Jubaland regional state and central government-based in Mogadishu.
