Somalia Ramps Up War on Al Shabab

Read Time:35 Second

Somali authorities say large-scale mobilization is underway in Middle Shabelle as government launches the second offensive phase against al-Shabab.

Defense Minister Ahmes Moalim Fiqi, Mogadishu mayor Hassan Hussein Mungab, military officers and lawmakers visited the region to rally forces and oversee preparations.

Officials urged communities to support the operation, announcing a major operation is planned to clear al-Shabab from limited areas still controlled in Middle Shabelle.

Residents report heightened military activity as Somali National Army units coordinate with locals following weeks of meetings uniting security forces and civilians.

Middle Shabelle was previously a frontline where al-Shabab suffered major defeats, but their presence in certain pockets prompted authorities to launch this campaign.
