Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has inaugurated a new military intelligence facility in Mogadishu, aimed at boosting the country’s defense capabilities.
The state-of-the-art headquarters will serve as the base for the Somali National Army’s Reconnaissance and Intelligence Command, equipped with modern technology to improve intelligence gathering and coordination in the fight against terrorism.
President Mohamud said the new centre reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening security institutions amid ongoing efforts to counter Al-Shabaab militants.
The inauguration follows a recent operation in Ceel-Dheer, where Somali forces and allied militias reportedly killed at least 60 fighters from the al-Qaida-linked group, including senior commanders.
After the opening, the president visited other defence ministry departments and commended the armed forces for their ongoing resilience in combating the insurgency.
Al-Shabaab has been waging a violent insurgency in Somalia for more than a decade, seeking to impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law.
