Somalia’s federal Cabinet on Thursday approved key laws and agreements, including the country’s updated penal code and a draft law to establish a national environmental management agency.

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, also endorsed a memorandum of understanding with Algeria on cooperation in oil, gas, and mineral resources.

International conventions on maritime salvage and the Geneva Conventions’ additional protocols were also ratified.

Cabinet members received reports on security and electoral progress in Somalia’s one-person, one-vote system.

Prime Minister Hamza instructed the government to mediate clan conflicts, assigning the Interior Ministry to coordinate peace efforts.
