Somalia: Mogadishu mayor’s burial delayed
MOGADISHU, Somalia — The slain Mogadishu mayor Abdirahman Osman’s body is being kept in a cold storage site in Qatar’s capital, Doha.
Somalia has delayed the burial for mayor Osman as his body was not brought into the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Osman died in Doha hospital on Thursday after he seriously injured in a suicide attack on his office in Mogadishu.
The attack was claimed by al Shabaab.
Somali armed group al-Shabab regularly targets places frequented by government officials in Somalia and also neighboring Kenya.
The militant group, founded in 2006, wants to impose a strict version of Islamic law and is fighting to overthrow the Western-backed government in Somalia.
The al Qaeda linked group used to control most major cities and towns in southern and central Somalia but a UN-mandated African Union peacekeeping force has pushed them out of those areas of the war-ravaged nation.
