Kenya has introduced a new visa policy granting citizens of all East African Community (EAC) member states visa-free entry for up to 180 days.
However, the policy excludes Somalia — despite its full membership in the EAC. This exception has triggered regional concerns about fairness and integration within the bloc.
Somalia officially joined the EAC in March 2024, becoming the eighth member. Its exclusion raises questions about Kenya’s commitment to equal treatment of partner states.
Observers warn that such inconsistencies risk undermining the EAC’s vision of seamless mobility, cooperation, and trust across member countries in the regional bloc.
Kenyan authorities have not offered a clear explanation. Meanwhile, Somali officials and citizens continue to seek answers and equal inclusion within the EAC framework.
