Somalia, EU sign €23M deal for road building

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia and the European Union have jointly signed 23 million euros deal to contribute rebuilding and developments of cities in Mogadishu and Berbera.

The agreement was jointly signed Somalia’s Minister of Planning Jamal Mohamed Hassan, and General Director of the European Union for International Development, Stefano Manservisi.

Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khair has witnessed the signing cooperation agreement between his country and the European Union during a ceremony in the capital, Mogadishu.

The €15 million of the funding was intended to build a highway line which is consisting 17 km in the capital, Mogadishu.

But, Mogadishu will also authorize the rest of €8 million which was intended development and youth development in Berbera.

Berbera is a coastal city in Somaliland, a self-declared state, but internationally-recognized as a semi-autonomous region in Somalia.

Minister of Planning Jamal Mohamed Hassan says the road project was honored late mayor of Mogadishu, (Engineer Yarisow), who succumbed to his injuries last month after he was seriously injured in a suicide bomb attack claimed by Al Shabaab.

Hassan says the signing ceremony was also attended by the new mayor of Mogadishu, EU Ambassador to Somalia Nicolas Berlanga Martinez and members of a family of the late mayor of Mogadishu.

He said the project which is part of the country’s development efforts will be implemented and being benefited by the people of Somalia.

In his turn, Mr. Stefano Manservisi said the project would contribute to the implementation of the vision of peace and development for the late mayor of Mogadishu.

However, Somali PM Khaire has affirmed the country’s late mayor’s vision was evidence for developments in Mogadishu, calling his focus as ‘vital to the successes’ of Somalia.
