MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least 10 government soldiers have been killed in bomb explosion followed by ambush attack on an armored military personnel carrier near Somali capital Mogadishu.
The explosion followed by Al Shabaab ambush attack targeted an armored vehicle carrying Somali soldiers near Bal’ad town, some 30km north of Mogadishu, a witness said.
He told Mareeg Online that at least 10 soldiers killed on board, after the explosion.
The attack hit Somali soldiers heading to the capital of Mogadishu, after departing from Jowhar town.
“I saw burnt armored vehicle after the bomb attack, then Al Shabaab ambushed the soldiers”, he added.
Two minibuses reportedly evacuated scores of soldiers injured in the attack.
The victims were taken into Mogadishu for medical treatment, according to local residents.
There was no word from Somali military officials over the attack.
Somali based group Al Shabaab claimed the responsibility for Saturday’s gun and bomb attack.
Al Shabaab group has been driven out of many urban areas since 2011 following joint military offensives carried out by African Union forces and Somali National Army forces.
The group still controls territory in rural areas and carries out gun attacks and bombings on military and civilian targets in the war-ravaged nation.
