MOGADISHU, Somalia – A lad Adnan Osman Elmi has been elected to the House of the People of Somalia, after a day of voting for the lower chamber of the federal parliament in Somali capital Mogadishu.

Elmi has defeated on Tuesday his rival Ahmed Osmaan handily, garnering 48 out of 51 votes casted by electoral college delegates for his seat.

He will be replacing his father Osman Elmi, who was shot and killed on Feb 23, 2019 by Al Shabaab assassins armed with pistols in Karan district of Mogadishu.

The winner says he partly attributes his success to the support he received from the elders of his clan, who she says were willing to listen to him.

“I was tired of looking on as my country descended into chaos,” he said.

The tenth Parliament of Somalia was inaugurated on 27 December 2016.

However, International partners played an important role in providing political, financial, technical and logistical support to Somalia’s electoral process from its inception, while welcoming the ceremony for the official opening of the second session of parliament of Somalia.
