MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least 7 military soldiers have been killed in bomb and gun attack claimed by Al Shabaab near Somali capital Mogadishu

The attack took place in Dhanane area near Mogadishu, after roadside bomb explosion hit an armored vehicle carrying chief f 12th April Division, Gen. Omar Aden and deputy Abdi Ali Jamame, according to military official, who asked to be anonymous.

He says Gen. Aden and his deputy Jamame and 5 other soldiers were killed in bomb explosion followed by an ambush attack carried out by Al Shabaab.

In a statement, Al Shabaab claimed to have killed at least 8 soldiers, including two senior army Generals in Thursday’s surprise assault near Somali capital.

“Our Mujahidin fighters have killed the army chief f 12th April Division, Gen. Aden and deputy Jamame in bomb attack and a fierce fighting”, the group claimed though its website.

There was no immediate comment from Somali military over the claims.

Al Shabaab group has been driven out of many urban areas since 2011 following joint military offensives carried out by African Union forces and Somali National Army forces.

The group still controls territory in rural areas and carries out gun attacks and bombings on military and civilian targets in the war-ravaged nation.
